COVENTRY CYCLE PROJECT

Cycling is the sensible transport choice, particularly in our cities – and this project will make cycling more accessible and affordable to all

The Coventry Cycling Centre was formally opened in Cycle Week in June 2004. It is based in the Coventry Peace House; a housing co-operative and peace and environment centre in a busy part of multi cultural Coventry. The centre is self sustaining and run by volunteers.  Bikes are sold at cost for between £15-£30.  This money goes towards the overheads of the building, spare parts and tools.

The aim of the project is to send seven volunteers on a bicycle mechanics training course. The training will improve efficiency and allow the Centre to recycle more bicycles but crucially volunteers will have the skills to train others and increase the number of bicycle mechanics. This training is pivotal to the future of the Centre because more trained volunteers guarantees its long term sustainability.  Currently there is no maintenance training in the city for the general public and an aspiration of the Centre is to be able, with more trained volunteers to make these skills accessible to all.
